Nevertheless it is a terrific review. Read it carefully. Diary 12 or read it here:   Another Pirate Text   The old fun-fairs used to have something called the Ghost Train in which track-switching dodgem cars travelling in a complete darkness illuminated by sudden encounters with glowing skulls, witches in Gothic alcoves, and twitching corpses in vaulted tombs. Eugenia Macer-Story replaces this ancient corny apparatus by much cooler mind-states, but the dramatic effect is still much the same: turn a page, and you do not know what is going to come at you from out of the dark. It is done almost stream-of-consciousness style, and after James Joyce, such novels did not generate a good reputation. Ulysses, it seemed was a one-off experiment that though quite revolutionary, could never be repeated. Doing Business In The Adirondacks is brilliantly done, extremely well-written and the author manages to keep the colours, settings, and atmospheres from all flowing into one another and becoming yet another stream-of consciousness mess. The “I” of the narrative lives in the smashed telephone exchanges that represent the consciousness of our time. She gets up in the morning, and starts the day like a time-traveller returning to a wrecked planet she once called home. Here is a piece of conscious recall that still works, there a piece that dies in her hands, here are pieces of mechanistic consciousness that require spare parts, are ill-maintained, obsolete, or are design failures. Instead of here be dragons, it could be said that in the maps of her mind here be prototypes, conspiracies of mind-states, trips and technologies. Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow is the obvious influence, but nevertheless, the book stands by itself as a visionary text of our time. If the novel has a landscape it is the landscape of no less than fifty years of alternative New Age culture, from Nazis occultism to UFO contactee-culture, from techno-cults to Virtualism. Since air travel in the USA had been halted for security reasons, it was not possible for the scheduled speakers to travel to the Austin area.  Poet Macer-Story, shown here with her guitar, was also scheduled to perform a set of her "interdimensionalist songs" at the NUFOC'38 event. These songs are available as taped for advance publicity. ~~When traveling home to New York by air I have often thought that at night the city looks like a beautiful piece of filigreed jewelry, studded with electric gems. At a distance, it is hard to believe that people actually inhabit these distant designs.  One assumes that the terrorists who rammed several passenger aircraft into large public buildings like children playing with toys rammed into stacks of dominos were insane (perhaps possessed by an evil djinn ) in the sense that they saw these buildings as unreal, like distant jeweled graffiti. For if the intention was actually to wound and kill thousands of innocent, hard working people, these terrorists have no right to claim they are involved in an Islamic Holy War. Inside the World Trade Center buildings there were many Arab and East Indian businesses, concessions and financial personnel. Some of these third world concessions offered incense and religious literature to the weary and hurried commuters.  Allah will place the spirits of these terrorists in the hell worlds until the end of time. Allah will assist in the capture and punishment of all who assisted in this savage and indefensible murder of innocent workers. Praise Allah. Ludwig--was taped. This contains poet Eugenia Macer-Story reading a poem on Irish Heritage from her new chapbook as well as another poem from that same book about the mystical significance of rifle shots at the winter solstice. At some point in the future this will be shown on television. Date to be announced. BUT you will have to "wait until the fat lady sings" as they did use to say in vaudeville. For Macer-Story is the next to last act in this three hour show.This way you will have to see what REALLY goes on in those lofts in Soho... if you really want to get through to the Irish mystical poetry performance.. On August 4 this same poet was featured by RIFT magazine--reading selections of her new & olde poems at the HUDSON GRILLE. On Saturday July 18 at 10:30 a.m.(that's right! Ten in the morning!) at the NEWARK,N.J. PUBLIC LIBRARY this same and identical poet E. Macer-Story read new poems and poems previously published in SENSATIONS  and other literary magazines. An initial reading of MISTER SHOOTING STAR was open to the public at Theater For The New City located at 155 First Avenue (between Ninth and Tenth Streets) in NYC. This took place on Monday January 26 at 7 p.m. in the Cabaret Theater downstairs.
